A traditional pumpkin pie for thanksgiving is always a fall staple, but do it with a twist this season by adding some apples to it. This dessert is best served warm, and you can top it up with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

To make the pumpkin apple pie, you will need to prepare the pie crust and a flavorful pumpkin filling. To make the pumpkin pie filling, you will need pumpkin puree, evaporated milk, sugar, spices, and butter. And then, we will make a beautiful apple mixture to transform this dessert into a delightful dish.

In the sections below, I’m going to take you through step-by-step instructions for all three items that are coming together in this dish. Along the way, I will also share with you some tips to have the most amazing results. So, let’s begin with our pumpkin apple pie recipe.

In a medium bowl, add 1 1/2 cups flour, salt, and sugar (optional) and stir to combine. Add butter cubes with flour and mix using a fork or spatula. Mix the butter into the flour with a pastry blender until the flour texture becomes crumbly. Add the remaining 1 cup of flour to this mixture. Mix the butter and flour until both the ingredients are evenly distributed. At this point, your dough should look crumbly with pea-sized pieces.

Sprinkle ice water over the mixture. Start with four tablespoons of water. Using a rubber spatula, press the dough so that the crumbs begin to form larger clusters. Pinch some of the dough. If it holds together, it’s ready. 

If you feel that the dough is falling apart, add 2 to 4 more tablespoons of water and check if the dough comes together.

Remove the dough from the bowl and place it on a clean surface. Knead the dough just enough to form a ball. Cut the dough ball in half and form both halves into discs. Wrap each disc with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. You can also freeze this dough for up to 3 months. Before using, you can thaw it overnight in the fridge.

If you don’t want to prepare the dough at home, you can also use readymade dough.

Preheat the oven to 375°. In a bowl, whisk the pumpkin puree, milk, sugar, egg, cinnamon, and salt until smooth.

In a saucepan, combine cornstarch, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Stir in water until the mixture turns smooth. Add the butter and bring to a boil. Now add apples and cook them for 4 minutes.

On a lightly floured surface, roll dough to a 1/8-in. thick circle and transfer to a 9-in. pie plate. Trim crust to 1/2 in. beyond the rim of the plate; flute edge. Add apple mixture to the crust. Pour the pumpkin mixture over the apple layer.

 You can decorate the pie edge by folding the crust on the edges. Or else you can cut out some extra dough into leaves using a cookie cutter. Decorate the whole pie if you desire or only the edges. 

Bake the pie for 50-55 minutes until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Remove it from the oven and allow it to cool. Your pumpkin apple pie is ready. You can serve it with whipped cream or ice cream.
